The solution includes 2 components. The earthquake early warning component, which can detect earthquakes and provide information about the source location, the event magnitude and the expected level of ground motion in a target site by analyzing real time data from a network of seismographic sensors deployed in the region. The atmospheric component is a short term early warning system for meteorological conditions, based on the Global Forecasting System (GFS) and provides 7-day operational forecasts in 3-hour intervals. The station-forecasting data include temperature, humidity, sea level pressure, wind speed and direction, solar radiation and sea state.
The solution employs state of the art methodologies for earthquake early warning and atmospheric monitoring using real time data from sensors. The system is tailored to the needs of the SIPS and the resulting information obtained by real time analysis can be critical in decision making only a few moments after a disastrous environmental event strikes the SIPS in question.
